Suggested

ITINERARY

To hike the Thorsborne Trail typically takes four to five days to complete, depending on pace and weather conditions. Here’s a suggested itinerary.

Day 1: Ramsay Bay to Little Ramsay Bay (6.5 km)

The adventure begins at Ramsay Bay, where hikers disembark from a boat transfer and take their first steps onto the island’s wild terrain. The trail initially follows a sandy path before transitioning into dense rainforest. Along the way, hikers encounter picturesque freshwater creeks and stunning views of the rugged coastline.

Little Ramsay Bay provides the first campsite, a serene location with a freshwater creek and access to the beach. The lagoon behind the beach is a haven for birdlife, making it a great spot for nature observation.

Day 2: Little Ramsay Bay to Zoe Bay (10.5 km)

This section of the trail is one of the most challenging, with rocky headlands, steep climbs, and several creek crossings. Hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of the island’s mountain ranges, including the imposing Mount Bowen (1,121m).

Zoe Bay is a highlight of the journey, with its long stretch of golden sand and the iconic Zoe Falls. A refreshing swim in the plunge pool beneath the falls is a must, and for those seeking a panoramic view, a steep scramble to the top of the falls reveals breathtaking vistas of the island and Coral Sea.

Day 3: Zoe Bay to Mulligan Falls (7.5 km)

The trek continues southward through dense rainforest and open eucalypt woodland. This section is relatively easier, with well-defined paths leading to Mulligan Falls. The campsite here is one of the most scenic, with the cascading waterfall providing a stunning backdrop.

Mulligan Falls offers another opportunity for a rejuvenating swim, with its crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush greenery. The area is also home to various wildlife, including goannas and cockatoos, adding to the immersive experience.

Day 4: Mulligan Falls to George Point (7.5 km)

The final stretch of the Thorsborne Trail leads hikers through mangrove forests and coastal wetlands before emerging at George Point. The last section is relatively flat, but the changing landscape provides a final reminder of the island’s diverse ecosystems.

At George Point, hikers are met by their pre-arranged boat transfer back to the mainland, completing an unforgettable adventure through one of Australia’s last true wilderness areas.
